I can't say that I've given it my full attention since I've been pretty busy lately, but for now I would have to oppose the opinions expressed in those reviews. I'll throw a few of my opinions your way, maybe it'll help. Here they are...
The graphics are well polished and it looks really nice. I'm almost embarassed to say that it reminds me of a 360 version of Killzone but I know someone will eventually gun me down and yell FANBOY!
It does a good job at throwing you in some heavy gun fights, then suddenly slowing you down with the chill factor having you peak around every corner and checking your six.
I'm playing it on hard and I can't really say I feel the struggle. However, the FPS genre ismy favorite and I do consider myself to be a pretty hardcore gamer.
I tried the online multiplayer for a bit and I thought it was pretty cool. I couldn't give a solid opinion on it without dedicating enough time though. I thought the mechs were a sweet addition but I don't know if that would be enough to keep the multiplayer aspect from running dry. The multiplayer portion of the first FEAR game was pretty dull in my opinion. I heard they were planning new game modes for FEAR 2 in the future though.
I love the intel items you pick up during the game. They're not useless items that you'd simple pick up for an achievement like you would do in Call of Duty 4, they actually have intel in them *gasp*. They really do a good job at connecting you to the FEAR story, which many FPS do very poorly.
I can't say Alma freaks me out, she almost feels like my big bad bodyguard at this point in the game (hasn't laid a finger on me yet). I know many gamers have been boasting she's not so scary anymore but I can't form a solid opinion on that. She's no purple dinosaur, but I can't say I've changed my bed sheets either. I think she does a good job at deliverying a creepy story though. I do have it in my head that the title is FEAR and that on a psychological level, they've marketted the game so that I'd be full of FEAR before even loading up the game, so I guess I'm fighting against it.
Office, hallway, hallway, office, hallway, office, office, hallway - there's a lot of that but I wouldn't complain about it.
Overall, probably my favorite game right now. Can't say I'm generally impressed with what's out there right now, so I may have lowered my standards lately.
I tried the demo - I enjoyed it, I just didn't feel like it was enough though. The mech sequence really turned me off I'll say - but there's just something about the combat in fear that I really just LOVE. Maybe it's the fact that you can jump kick people in the face?
Hey Imran, just finished the game today. You could probably play through it on a weekend since it's really short. Overall I liked it, so I'm headed off to war on the multiplayer front soon. I still stand by my opinion that the game was far to easy even on the harder difficulty settings. On the bright side, there wasn't much of that mech action that you seem to want to avoid. While I never got to jump kick someone in the face, I was thinking of saving my first boot print for multiplayer. I won't say much about the ending except that I think my character caught an STD. The game is VENOM approved!
I think if you skip out on trying to investigate for some goodies you'll be left out in the cold with regards to the story. I think the intel items that are scattered around will do the best job at delivering the story to you. Without the intel items, I can see the story getting a bit cloudy. I don't know how many intel items I've collected, but I know I collected more than half since I received an achievement for them (so that helped a lot). The intel items you collect are stored in your menus, so you can put the puzzle pieces together once the clues start coming in. If you end up renting or picking up the game, I strongly suggest exploring and looking around for some intel.
I played a bit of the first one, but I never completed the story. FEAR 2 does a great job at filling in the blanks for those that haven't played the first, you just need to watch out for those intel items!
